The Golden Rules of Wood Board Care: DO's & DON'Ts
Think of your wooden board like a prized possession; it needs regular attention and a little routine maintenance to thrive. Getting these basics right will drastically extend your board's life.
The DO's of Daily Care:
-
Hand Wash with a Gentle Touch: After each use, hand wash your board with a little mild dish soap and a soft cloth or non-abrasive scrubber.
-
Rinse Immediately: Get rid of food particles and soap residue right away under warm running water.
-
Dry Completely: This is crucial! Immediately dry your board with a clean kitchen towel, removing as much excess surface water as possible.
-
Air Dry, Propped Up: Let it air dry completely by propping it up on its edge. This allows air to circulate evenly around both sides.
-
Store Vertically: Always store your board upright. Even when a board seems dry, wood fibers can still retain subtle moisture. Laying it flat traps this moisture against the surface, leading to uneven drying and causing the wood to cup or warp over time. Proper vertical storage allows continuous air circulation, keeping your board perfectly flat and happy.
The DON'Ts (These are Deal-Breakers!):
-
NO Soaking: Absolutely do NOT soak or submerge your board in water. This applies to all wooden kitchenware. Soaking leads to severe warping, wood splitting, and mildew.
-
NO Dishwasher: Running your board through the dishwasher is a one-way ticket to ruin. The intense heat, harsh detergents, and prolonged water exposure are wood's worst enemies.
-
NO Laying Flat to Dry: Leaving it flat traps moisture underneath, encouraging warping and uneven wood expansion.
-
NO Extreme Temperatures: Avoid leaving your board in direct sunlight or subjecting it to extreme temperature shifts (like placing it directly next to a hot stove or oven). This can cause deep cracking.
Nourish Your Wood: Long-Term Maintenance
Just like your skin needs moisturizer, a premium wooden board needs targeted nourishment to prevent drying, cracking, and looking dull over time.
Our Superior Pre-Treatment Makes a Difference! At The Blended Oasis, we take an extra step in our Washington workshop that sets us apart. Unlike many mass-produced operations that simply wipe on a quick layer of oil, we meticulously soak all our custom cutting boards and kitchen gear in a deep bath of food-grade mineral oil during creation. This deep saturation ensures a robust initial conditioning. We then lock it in with a generous application of our specialized, locally prepared Board Butter.
The result? Your board arrives extra-nourished and ready for action, letting you jump straight to a less frequent maintenance schedule!
To protect your investment over time, treat your wooden board with one of the following food-grade moisturizers whenever it starts to look dry or light in color:
-
Board Butter (Our personal favorite at The Blended Oasis! Reach out to us directly to grab a tin).
-
Food-Grade Mineral Oil
-
Butcher Block Conditioner
Recommended Ongoing Moisturizing Schedule:
Thanks to our deep pre-treatment process, your board is already off to an exceptional start! You can skip the intensive break-in phases and jump straight to standard maintenance: 1x per month for the first year (and as needed afterward when the wood looks dry).
Important Note: Please do not use vegetable oils (like olive, vegetable, or canola oil) to treat your wood. They oxidize and turn rancid over time, leaving a sticky residue and a highly unpleasant smell on your food prep surface. Food-grade mineral oil or dedicated board conditioners are always required!
A Special Note on Resin Inlays & Laser Engraved Boards
At The Blended Oasis, we specialize in intricate laser-engraved designs and stunning epoxy resin accents. Here is how to navigate food prep on these custom artistic styles:
-
100% Food-Safe, Always: All our cutting boards and charcuterie platters, whether they feature resin artistry or deep custom engraving, are designed to be completely food-safe for all your culinary serving adventures.
-
Cutting on Laser Engraved Areas: Yes, you absolutely can cut directly on laser-engraved sections! The engraving is precisely burned into the natural wood grain and will not chip or flake.
-
Cutting on Epoxy Resin Areas: While it is technically possible, we strongly advise against cutting directly on the epoxy resin accents. Cutting on resin is much like knife-etching into glass; it can scratch the glossy artisan surface permanently and dull your knives. For best results and to preserve the beautiful resin work, use these stylized sections for display, serving, or as visual markers for where not to cut!
